AT THE APPOINTED HOUR the deck fills with people carrying the same equipment, standing at the same rail, waiting for the same eleven minutes. Nobody arranged it. The schedule was set years ago by whoever first published the shot.
What is being produced is not documentation, it is attendance. The image proves someone was there at the time the time was agreed.
TWENTY MINUTES BEFORE, THE same vantage is unclaimed. The light is worse and the subject is more legible, because nothing about the scene has been arranged to flatter it yet.
The cost is that the result will not perform. It looks unfinished next to the promised version, and it is the only one of the two that records anything.
A WORSE PICTURE WITH a witness behind it outranks a better one produced on schedule. That is not a moral position; it is an evidentiary one. The first can be questioned and answered, the second cannot be questioned at all.
Held long enough, this produces an archive that looks quieter than its peers and holds up considerably better against the place it claims to describe.
